I went to grad school knowing I wanted to open my own private practice, but this was at a time when private practice was not the popular path. I was often met with doubts, and although my mentors had the best intentions, even they did their best to tell me why this was a bad idea.  

Fast forward three years and four months after graduation and I had done it anyway. The same day that my therapy license officially posted was also my first day as a new business owner. 

You may be wondering what I did in those three years, but here's the thing - I learned so you don't have to. I started from the ground up. I spent those previous three years working at an agency setting to gain my licensing hours while working weekends at a private practice. I eventually added a third job as a group home social worker and then a teaching position at the local CSU. You see, I didn't have a huge savings account as a safety net, I didn't have a significant other to prop me up if things got tough, and I didn't have a whole lot of confidence in my worth. What I did have was a mortgage, a bit of naivety, a serious scarcity mindset that helped me budget, and an overwhelming desperation to live life on my own terms.

I was hell bent on making my dream a reality, but I was quickly becoming an overworked and burned out therapist. I spent my free time researching and planning my exodus from employee to self-employed business owner, with the knowledge that as soon as I was legally able to start my practice (upon licensure), I would be ready.

I survived those first three years and learned a tremendous amount about myself and business ownership along the way. I have continued to grow my practice more than a decade later and in more recent years I have started helping other Helpers cultivate their own private practices. What started as me offering the support I didn't have has turned into a system that is helping a growing community of Helpers cultivate private practices aligned with their visions and lifestyles.
